Big Changes Ahead

The League of Women Voters Upper St. Croix Valley is undergoing changes that will expand our reach and help us to serve more people. St. Croix County will be included in our district which includes Burnett and Polk counties at this time. Member Kay Brooks will represent St. Croix County at meetings.

We are getting a new website that will be up and running soon thanks to the expertise of member Emily Gall. This blog will discontinue once the new website is published.

In the meantime, enjoy this event coming up in Burnett County.

Fake News & Media Literacy

The League of Women Voters Upper St. Croix Valley is sponsoring a free public event titled "Fake News and Media Literacy" with guest speaker Susan LoRusso, Assistant Professor, Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. The presentation will be held at the Unity School Performing Arts Center, 1908 150th Street/Highway 46, Balsam Lake, from 10:00 am to noon on Saturday, March 30, 2019.

Dr. LoRusso, alumna of Luck High School, teaches undergraduate courses on media literacy, health communication, media effects, and mass media and public culture. Her research examines the effects of the public's routine exposure to information on media platforms with a particular focus on misinformation, conflicting information, and controversial information. Research topics include news coverage and social media sharing of cancer and mental health information. She has recently been published in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journal of Magazine & News Media Research, Health Communication, Preventive Medicine, and Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics.

"The average person, with limited time, is often in a quandary trying to discern what is fact and how they can avoid fake news, especially if they don't know where the news came from. We all need more skills when we are barraged by news coming at us in different forms and from different directions," said Patti Hurd, Event Chair. LoRusso will ground her presentation on the 1st Amendment and principles and practices of journalism. She will field questions from the audience.

Refreshments will be served.
